Review: Since re-discovering my love of a
solid mystery novel, it
doesn’t take much to embroil an interested reader such as myself in a good one.
Few pages in, award-winning author, Irene Hannon addicts interest with her
fabulous pacing and creative skills. Hook, line and sinker – all three elements
are prominent in this mystery involving a credited reporter Moira Harrison
whose accident on a lonely road one rainy night leads her straight to the doorstep
of the detective agency Phoenix, INC. and more specifically Cal Burke. Now
retired from law enforcement, Cal is skeptical when he hears Moira’s story of a
woman lying in the road and a Good Samaritan who never dialed 911 but something
about Moira intrigues Cal. Going against the clues, he takes the pro bono case,
opening a Pandora’s Box full of secrets in the process.
Considering
only the characters, I found myself enjoying each one of them. Whether it was
the easy-going camaraderie between the three P.I.’s – Dev, Connor and Cal,
relationships centered on trust or the sweet-natured tenderness that develops
between Moira and her leading man, Cal, there wasn’t a weak link in the bunch.
All of them are well developed even in the moments when pasts are skimped over
or you question the motivation behind an action. And that’s saying nothing
about the intriguing story - one who’s secrets
are uncovered earlier on than expected but is still able to entire its reader
to read until completion. Keeping pace is a fabulous, well-crafted novel that
tells a surprisingly believable scenario in a thriller of a tale. If there was
one thing I found a bit trite its finding the heroine in danger yet again in
the final climax. As a writer, I “get” this plot device but as a reader, it
becomes tiresome to encounter in book after book. That isn’t enough to stop me
from recommending this – perhaps even as the best of the Hannon novel’s I’ve yet to read. To say I will be
anxiously waiting the second in the series is an understatement.
In Summary: Nail-biting suspense at its best; Irene Hannon again scores with this,
the first in a new series that doesn’t just promise
to hold any fan’s interest, it’s a sure thing.
Synopsis:
Reporter Moira Harrison
is new on the job in St. Louis, but she’s no rookie to investigative reporting.
She knows how to dig for answers and get results. But when she hits a
pedestrian on a rainy night in a wooded area—only to have both the victim and
the good Samaritan who stopped to assist disappear—she turns to P.I. Cal Burke,
an ex-homicide detective, to help her sort out the puzzle. Cal is more than a
little skeptical of her story, especially since the police have dismissed it.
But as clues begin to surface, bringing them closer to answers, the danger
mounts. Because someone doesn’t want this mystery solved—and will stop at
nothing to protect a shocking secret that will destroy a life built on lies.

Loved this book so much! Definitely can't wait for "Trapped," the next one. :)
ReplyDeleteAs did I, Charity - as you say, book two cannot release quickly enough. :)
DeleteLoved getting your thoughts--I agree Moira getting "in harm's way" has been done with other female heroines in other books.....but what book doesn't copy itself anymore?! I still loved it though =D
ReplyDeleteAs did I enjoy reading your review, Ella (and am happy to see your smiling face here again :D).
DeleteOh, I am well aware that so many works of fiction are "copy-cats" - heck, my own scribbling's copy "staple" ideas. From a writing perspective, I totally "get" this twist but from a readers, it's sometimes frustrating(!) ...in the end, it mattered not: I loved it! :)
Must look this up! I've been in need of a good read lately! Thanks, Rissi!
ReplyDeleteIf you like "suspense," Kellie, this is a MUST-read. I LOVED it. :)
DeleteI would have commented last night had I not been so tired... lol
ReplyDeleteSO glad you enjoyed this one as much as I, Rissi! I'm a big Irene Hannon fan and I agree, the bad guy kidnapping the girl does get kind of old in a sense that it's predictable. I cannot wait for the next one to come out later this year. I'm sure it will be just as great. :D
Oh, that's okay, girl. Hope your Internet is all back up to speed now. :)
DeleteAs am I! This was such a great, suspenseful read. Loved it! Being an aspiring writer, I do sympathize with being able to create some suspense in the climax, hence the reason the heroine is put in danger (well that and allowing the hero to rescue her ;D) but as a reader, the repetitiveness gets old. Like you, I'm excited to read Dev's story. Should be great. :)
Yes! It was fixed about a week ago and the whole family is back to normal. *big grin*
DeleteExactly! It's like two separate views imposing in my mind. I understand, yet I want something fresh. Hehehe...
That's great! I sympathize with you - I've been there.
DeleteWell said - it is two imposing views. Perhaps some new suspense novels in 2013 will take a fresh approach. :)
I seriously need to start reading this author's books! They all look so exciting...yet I haven't picked one up yet :/ Thank you for the review :) Sierra
ReplyDeleteKeep growing beautiful!
*gasp*
DeleteYou've not read any of these yet, girl!? Goodness, you must. If I ever find myself in a situation when I have an extra, I'd be happy for you to have it - and you'd be the first I'd offer it too. :)
Exciting is definitely a word to describe these, Sierra - they're usually pulse-pounding and fabulous all-around. Hope you enjoy!
Aww that is so sweet :) Thanks so much! I've seen them at the library several times...time when my card has been full to bursting :/ I know it's terrible of me....I've really been wanting to though. Next time I see one I'll have to grab it! Sierra
DeleteKeep growing beautiful!
No, it's not terrible of you - at all. There are far too many good books out there, and we have to pick and chose. I'm being very "hard" on myself trying to nail down which authors/genres I like best. I waste enough time as it is, and I don't need to compound that by reading books that I'll have to "force" myself to read.
DeleteHope you enjoy Irene's novels, Sierra!!!
Hehehehe I will. I don't think I could ever nail it down :P I used to be in a "I always have to finish the book" mindset. But now if I don't like or enjoy it I just put it down. But I try to find books I think I'd like. Sierra
ReplyDeleteKeep growing beautiful!
Oh, I can put down a book without finishing it easily, Sierra but that's a problem if it's one I've committed to reviewing. The main reason I'm trying to figure out favored genres and such is so I can pick them out better - for years, my family generally buys books since we never have belonged to a library plus we live outside city limits. Since we don't live extravagantly, that is one of our guilty pleasures. :D
DeleteFinding authors/books to like is always better for the experience of reading and reviewing has made me more critical but I need that so it's been helpful. :)
